CFU Executive Director Rushan Abbas Testifies for UK Parliament
Campaign For Uyghurs (CFU) Executive Director Rushan Abbas testified in the Foreign Affairs Committee for UK Parliament today regarding the ongoing genocide against Uyghurs, harassment of Uyghurs in diaspora, her own sister’s disappearance, and what action is necessary from the UK in order to stop the genocide.
In speaking, she reminded of the need for the UK to join others in calling these atrocities what they are, saying that “Public acknowledgement and official recognition that this is genocide would go a long way towards the pursuit of justice.” She continued to give attention to the needs to help obtain information on the missing relatives of Uyghurs, and to use diplomatic outlets to obtain information on cases while recognizing that they are hostages of what is in effect an international criminal organization.
She also encouraged the UK to take a strong stand on a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing 2022 Olympics, reminding them that “A country that has glorified concentration camps and slavery targeting one ethnicity because of their racial and religious differences, enforced genocide on our watch, does not respect the values of the Games, or of humanity”...”Beyond lip service, we must address our own complicity while recognizing that there are true evils on a level many of us have been privileged to avoid seeing or experiencing, and which are ruling unchecked today in China.”
CFU remains encouraged by the willingness of the UK Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee to actively seek solutions to end this genocide, and anticipates seeing additional actions.
